The outer insulation consists of special cross-linked polyethylene that is glued with an aluminium protective layer. This outer layer has to be removed without damaging the layer of aluminium underneath. One additional challenge of this project was the fact that the different layers are eccentrically positioned.

After defining the product design specifications, we designed a tool driven by a pair of diametrically opposed saw blades to cut the insulation.   A signal indicates when the correct cutting depth is reached. The Aluweld tool is capable of stripping to a maximum length of five metres. It provides the user with a safe and ergonomic method of working and a reproducible quality that does not depend on the skills of the engineer.
